World of Warcraft - Wrath of the Lich King: Game Director im Interview

  Personal Computer

Q: Another question we were asked to bring to your attention is about a collision system, which would add some extra flavour into BGs and PvP-Encounters. A valid future possibility for WoW or a general no go for any reason?

World of Warcraft - Wrath of the Lich King

A: Probably a general no go, just for the reason that in a game that is as lag tolerant as World of Warcraft, collision tends to add some gameplay depths, but on the other hand comes with a lot of frustrating gameplay, which keeps you bouncing around when server and client disagree on collision. So, the result often ends up in a so called rubber banding, when your avatar is thrown back to the last point in the landscape where the game is able to agree on, before desynchronisations had happened.

We don't feel like that the kind of gameplay experience it would actually lead to is worth the problems it causes.

Q: Gold sellers and farmers are still a present and annoying topic. Advertisements done with dead bodies close to the bank in Orgrimmar, like recently seen on Shattered Halls, seem to be present unavenged for far too long. Do you see any room for improvement?

A: We definitely continue to crack down on different methods for advertising gold. We actually made some huge strides in the last two years, where we had seen a lot of spamming in all the different channels from trial accounts and all sorts of things. We put a lot of limitations on trial accounts to prevent those things to happen.

The thing with people littering the ground with corpses will hopefully be addressed in a way that if you are not in the party with that player you won't see those corpses if it's coming from a trial account. Because the manpower needed to directly address and police such things is enormous and makes us search for a better performing solution.

Q: Talking about the esports aspect of WoW. How satisfied are you with the achieved status so far and what are the plans for the future?

World of Warcraft - Wrath of the Lich King

A: World of Warcraft really goes a lot beyond just esports. And even though we definitely want to continue to support the esports-community, I think it is important to have these events, like the recent warcraft regional finals, because it gives everyone of us a pinnacle of accomplishment we can look forward to. Those tournaments create heroes within the game you could say.

And we want to keep on iterating on what we have and improve what we have. Like the viewing experience for the spectators, as we found out that sometimes it is really hard to follow what is going on in the arena. Same goes for organizing such events and making it easier to setup tournaments like this.

But the vast majority of the team is focused on the general gaming experience of World of Warcraft. Creating new content and that sort of thing.
