Majesty 2 - The Fantasy Kingdom Sim: Preview
Since you can now now zoom in closer to the action on-screen, the viewing experience has become much more satisfying. In our experience, though, it hasn't always been easy to place the flags where we wanted: Very often, re-adjusting the viewing angle was needed before placement was possible. We'll have to wait and see if the final version will handle this better.
The full retail version will offer a complete and extensive single player campaign, in which you have to go through a huge number of quests, many with a not-so-serious undertone. This will be the most demanding aspect of play - while building your kingdom and raking in cash may seem challenging enough, having to wipe out a band of marauders from a nearby forest or killing a bunch of ratmen simultaneously would be quite the distraction.
As regards multiplayer, Majesty 2 is going to have what the original did not: It will actually - according to the developers - offer functional multiplayer (this feature obviously wasn't playable yet.) We strongly suspect players vie for dominance on various maps, and maybe there'll be conflict on a larger scale - between forces of good and evil. Generally speaking, this should take a lot of careful balancing.
Speaking of which: During our first few test runs we noticed that our heroes actually consider the situation they are sent to resolve and then decide on their own whether or not they'll partake. They really do have minds of their own, as they regularly flee from superior forces. This can cause serious problems, but if you have enough archers and wizards to back them up, they will stand their ground. Sometimes, all the gold in your coffers won't help you. The option to "persuade" reluctant heroes by torture, a la Dungeon Keeper or Stronghold, would be quite useful here - alas, no such luck.
First impression by Birgit GrunowIt took me quite a while to really warm to Majesty 2. But as soon as you get used to the style of play, you'll be reluctant to let go of this fine piece of software. The overall concept looks simple, but this is deceptive: Due to many more options for training and enhancing your heroes or constructing and upgrading buildings, the game has a lot more to offer than the original Majesty. Add to this updated graphics and sound, and Majesty 2 should be a regular funhouse for any RTS fan.
Be prepared to relax your old RTS reflexes and embrace the new way- only then can you start to enjoy this upcoming gem, chock-full of charm and humor. I'm already counting the days leading up to release and look forward to the finishing touches that will make the missions, balancing and gameplay perfect. I'm very eager to show how great a queen I can be. And if I have to unlock my treasure chest, I'm cool with that.
