Majesty 2 - The Fantasy Kingdom Sim: Preview
The wizards' spells are particularly effective against large groups of enemies, since they affect much greater areas than, say, warriors' melee attacks. With the pointy hat brigade at your disposal, you can even flatten whole buildings. Here you can take control of your elite wizard troopers yourself in order to select the most appropriate spell for the occasion. (This is particularly advisable when it comes to the defense of your own buildings.)
The other basic classes are more important when it comes to discovering new areas, as they're apparently more eager to run to any flag that promises a reward. The ranger is equipped with a bow and arrows, which makes him useful in ranged combat. The rogues might even steal from your own warehouses and marketplaces. It's a pain, but inevitable when you hire such disreputable help.
If you've earned enough gold, you gain access to more powerful hero classes- And then one well-trained paladin will keep a whole slew of attackers at bay where you had to rally a group of warriors before. If paladins are not to your liking, then how about a dwarf brandishing a warhammer? Maybe you'd prefer an elf, attacking from range with sharp eyes and even keener arrows? True there aren't many surprises, and a lot of the heroes are pretty run-of-the-mill, but we haven't seen everything Majesty 2 has to offer yet. We strongly suspect, however, that the number of classes will match the predecessor, since the enemies here are pretty similar to the first game, although giants did not appear in Majesty1 for example.
Howling goblins, mighty trolls, gaunt skeletons, ratmen- you get the idea- everything you know from the original is back. We'll only know if more's in store once we get our hands on the final version. From what we've seen so far it's fair to assume the developers are staying true to their roots. Still, there are new additions, like the new protective flag which will let you order your heroes to specific buildings, which they will visit and see if everything is fine, or if said building is in distress. (Yes, they'll obviously defend the home (or whatever it is) they aren't total dolts.)
As regards technology, a lot of changes have been made. Back in 2000, Majesty was a purely two-dimensional game, but the sequel has made the jump to 3D. Even in its unfinished state it's already looking pretty good, though you obviously can't expect all the bells and whistles of the lates generation of graphics. You can still feel the charm of the original in every part of the sequel.
